Work at Birch Grove began with the practical choreography needed to establish a well-organised site. Hoarding and welfare facilities were ordered, with the temporary canteen planned on a scaffold platform to make intelligent use of the restricted working area.
At the same time, the scaffold installation was nearing completion so that construction could begin. The team also considered how a skip could be accommodated on the street and what permissions or suspension arrangements might be required.
Although an early stage in the project, these preparations are an important part of the build: access, protection, welfare and material movement all need to be resolved before the design can start taking physical form.
