For these clients, having a home with both the potential for entertaining and relaxation was imperative. Accessible storage areas, fluid circulation and practical room configuration were our main focus areas on the ground floor to create a home that is well equipped for modern family life. All of these were done through increasing the Utility and WC’s floor plan by re-purposing unused space and creating another walkthrough from the original snug area to the kitchen/dining area. All of this was achieved without compromising on the clients’ desire for a large open plan kitchen/dining area.

These design considerations are also mirrored on the other floors, whereby the original room configurations were incompatible with the residents needs. By increasing the family bathroom, re-shaping some of the bedrooms and specifically designing a top floor master suite to work with the pitch of the roof we designed a new layout that better suited the structural alignment of the building.

The height of the extension was restricted due to the property’s location and thus we had to incorporate architectural details to create imagined space. Rooflights were designed running alongside the extension from the original structure to visually transport the inhabitant into a lighter and more atmospherically open space where the sky was visible. Externally, the double soldier course detailing is not only a unique feature but draws the eye up and elongates the structure visually.

Equally wanting to make the views to the rear garden a focal point, we designed the new extension to have expansive glazing features to the rear of the extension to not only frame the rear garden but to also allow for natural light to enter this section of the extension, purposefully hitting areas designed as relaxation/reading nooks.
